In class, we spoke briefly about how thanksgiving went for several people and thoughts about marriages. I am Nigerian and discussions about marriage in the Nigerian community is often had and extremely guided. Marriage is equated to wealth, support and true happiness. Many believe that you have not truly lived or experienced life if you are not married and do not have children of your own. Not all Nigerians believe this, but many do. In this post I am only speaking from experience and some of the ideas that have been ingrained in my mind growing up. Now, I do understand why marriage can be important, life changing and essential. For the user interface and user experience project, I though picking a restaurant that needs a lot of help would be a rewarding exercise. My group and I chose to do our project on Yen Ching, a Chinese restaurant here at Dekalb.  Upon arriving at the restaurant, my group and I were shocked by the initial outlook of the place. I found the space to be gloomy and a bit sad and depressing. Although the food was great, everything else needed work. I can only imagine the increase in customers and customer satisfaction if a few things were changed at Yen Ching. Initially upon arriving, I wanted to choose three things I thought needed the most improvement. I immediately noticed that the lighting was completely off. In the afternoon, a restaurant should have bright lightning so people don't feel gloomy, especially in the winter time. Another thing I knew I would change immediately was the menu. The user interface and user experience project should be quite interesting. I find myself thinking of things I would improve or do differently when I visit different establishments, especially restaurants. Oftentimes I find myself wondering how Dr. Kyburz comes up with these topics and if she assigns them based on what she feels we would learn the most from or solely from past experiences. I believe this project will allow us to have organized thoughts about a restaurant and actually come up with ways we can help improve the problems we see. I have thought about a few restaurants I’ve been to in the past that can definitely use some work and pointers in the right direction. I wonder how feasible it would be introduce our ideas to the restaurant owners. Would they take it as an insult? Would they listen and try to implement some of our suggestions? “The Ethic of Expediency: Classical Rhetoric, Technology, and the Holocaust” by Steven B. Katz, was quite mind-blowing for me. This article opened my mind to things pertaining to technical writing and the different motives, goals, and results of writing that I have not put much thought into. Katz’s ability to implement the use of writing and how it correlates to ethic and expediency was quite fascinating to me. When reading a piece of writing, readers don’t tend to think about the constraints authors might have or experience when writing, however, Katz was able to bring that to the limelight. Katz provided many supporting evidence in order to show readers that she not only did her research, but to also provide examples of the very nature of the debate she was so engulfed in. Katz, at the beginning of the article, showed how ethics correlated with expediency and instructional-writing in order to get a point across.
