Thanksgiving: Thoughts
In class, we spoke briefly about how thanksgiving went for several people and thoughts about
marriages. I am Nigerian and discussions about marriage in the Nigerian community is often had
and extremely guided. Marriage is equated to wealth, support and true happiness. Many
believe that you have not truly lived or experienced life if you are not married and do not have
children of your own. Not all Nigerians believe this, but many do.

In this post I am only speaking from experience and some of the ideas that have been ingrained
in my mind growing up. Now, I do understand why marriage can be important, life changing and
essential. Although this is the case for many, it is not the case for all. Someone in class stated
that he/she did not believe in marriage at all. I wanted to inquire more and find out why but
decided that might not have been the best use of class time.

Not everyone gets married because they are in pursuit of unending love and eternal happiness,
some people get married simply because of the legal implications and aspects. There is indeed
security in marriage, but how much security is there once one of the couples want to end their
union. You might wonder what my thoughts are, and I do believe in marriage and the institution
of marriage but I don’t believe it is something everyone ought to do or should do in their lifetime.

Don’t even get me started on the debate of having kids of your own and the idea that an adopted
child “does not count.” This is a long discussion I had with my grandmother. People are different
and believe different things for different reasons. Yes, there is something such as growing up
brainwashed to believe certain things but is it reality? What do you truly think and believe?
What’s right and wrong?
