Preparing to watch Nanette

I had never heard of Hannah Gadsby until Dr. Kyburz spoke about her and her Netflix original. I actually wanted to go home and watch Nanette right away based on Dr. Kyburz’s recommendation, however, I have decided to put a pause on that in order to share my initial reaction after watching the special next week in class. I’ve always believed that the best comedians use their life experiences in order to relate to others and make people laugh not just based on their jokes, but the fact that people relate to it so much they understand and embody the concepts.

Since I’ve decided wait to watch Nanette with the rest of the class, I decided to do some research about Hannah Gadsby. She was born January 12, 1978, in Australia, and is known as a comedian and writer. She won a Raw Comedy competition for new comedians in 2006 that allowed her to rise to fame. She is, however, best known for her Netflix special, Nanette. Gadsby is now known internationally and I’m a bit surprised I am just now learning about her.

Gadsby is the youngest of five children and graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Art history from Australian National University in 2003. Although Hannah Gadsby was diagnosed with ADHD and grew up with dysfunctional parents, she did not let this stop her from pursuing what she felt was important. Gadsby is a lesbian and has mentioned it several times while performing. She also supports many different charity organizations.

Learning so much about Gadsby makes me even more eager to watch Nanette and I’m looking forward to it.

Nanette Reflection

When watching Nanette, one of my first thoughts was whether or not it could even be categorized as a comedy. Comedy can mean different things to different people. What appears to be comedy to one person might not be comedy to another. When Nanette came on stage with dark pants, a dark shirt, and a blue blazer, I thought of her appearance, although dark, allowed her skills to truly come to life. Gadsby’s explanation of why she named the special Nannette was pretty funny and was a great start to the show. When Gadsby spoke about growing up in Tasmania and not feeling welcome because she was gay, the audience laughed, but I wondered if it was really funny. Yes, the performance aspect of comedy makes it funny but the sheer written words or message behind those words isn’t always funny and Gadsby was able to balance the two quite well, which makes memorable. “The Ethic of Expediency: Classical Rhetoric, Technology, and the Holocaust” by Steven B. Katz, was quite mind-blowing for me. This article opened my mind to things pertaining to technical writing and the different motives, goals, and results of writing that I have not put much thought into. Katz’s ability to implement the use of writing and how it correlates to ethic and expediency was quite fascinating to me. When reading a piece of writing, readers don’t tend to think about the constraints authors might have or experience when writing, however, Katz was able to bring that to the limelight. Katz provided many supporting evidence in order to show readers that she not only did her research, but to also provide examples of the very nature of the debate she was so engulfed in. User Interface and User Experience: Thoughts

The user interface and user experience project should be quite interesting. I find myself thinking of things I would improve or do differently when I visit different establishments, especially restaurants. Oftentimes I find myself wondering how Dr. Kyburz comes up with these topics and if she assigns them based on what she feels we would learn the most from or solely from past experiences. I believe this project will allow us to have organized thoughts about a restaurant and actually come up with ways we can help improve the problems we see. I have thought about a few restaurants I’ve been to in the past that can definitely use some work and pointers in the right direction. I wonder how feasible it would be introduce our ideas to the restaurant owners. Would they take it as an insult? Would they listen and try to implement some of our suggestions?
