Campus Signage Project: Thoughts

Trying to pick a sign for the Campus Signage Project is more difficult than I originally thought it would be. I sometimes envy those that live so close to campus and can walk into any one of NIU’s buildings and take pictures or look around. With the few pictures I took, I wondered if I needed to take more pictures or just look through what I have and go from there. I’ve contemplated just driving back to NIU for more pictures and a chance to see more flyers.

Dr. Kyburz did say we could use any flyer we wanted and reassured us that it isn’t mandatory we use an NIU flyer or a flyer posted on campus. I considered looking for flyers at other locations or choosing a flyer from work, however, before I could pursue that further, I found the flyer I wanted to use! I took pictures of 21 different flyers in our building and Reavis before leaving the night the assignment was introduced. I did not go through my phone to see if there was a flyer I wanted to work on because I sort of skimped each flyer as I took a pictures and figured I kinda knew what I was working with and didn’t feel like I had THE FLYER.

So what brought me to the realization I had THE FLYER? I decided to go through my photos and take a closer look to see if I could find THE FLYER. As I looked through each flyer, I realized that I could quickly guess what the  flyer was advertising simply by the images on the flyer and the title. I saw a flyer that I assumed was advertising cardinal gear and ways students can acquire NIU clothing st little to no cost, however it was a flyer regarding donating plasma! What? How if that possible? This flyer needs work? Yes! I found THE FLYER!

Nanette Reflection

When watching Nanette, one of my first thoughts was whether or not it could even be categorized as a comedy. Comedy can mean different things to different people. What appears to be comedy to one person might not be comedy to another. When Nanette came on stage with dark pants, a dark shirt, and a blue blazer, I thought of her appearance, although dark, allowed her skills to truly come to life. “The Ethic of Expediency: Classical Rhetoric, Technology, and the Holocaust” by Steven B. Katz

“The Ethic of Expediency: Classical Rhetoric, Technology, and the Holocaust” by Steven B. Katz, was quite mind-blowing for me. This article opened my mind to things pertaining to technical writing and the different motives, goals, and results of writing that I have not put much thought into. Katz’s ability to implement the use of writing and how it correlates to ethic and expediency was quite fascinating to me. When reading a piece of writing, readers don’t tend to think about the constraints authors might have or experience when writing, however, Katz was able to bring that to the limelight. Katz provided many supporting evidence in order to show readers that she not only did her research, but to also provide examples of the very nature of the debate she was so engulfed in. Katz, at the beginning of the article, showed how ethics correlated with expediency and instructional-writing in order to get a point across. User Interface and User Experience: Thoughts

The user interface and user experience project should be quite interesting. I find myself thinking of things I would improve or do differently when I visit different establishments, especially restaurants. Oftentimes I find myself wondering how Dr. Kyburz comes up with these topics and if she assigns them based on what she feels we would learn the most from or solely from past experiences. I believe this project will allow us to have organized thoughts about a restaurant and actually come up with ways we can help improve the problems we see. I have thought about a few restaurants I’ve been to in the past that can definitely use some work and pointers in the right direction. I wonder how feasible it would be introduce our ideas to the restaurant owners. Would they take it as an insult? Would they listen and try to implement some of our suggestions?
