Campus Signage Project: Thoughts

Trying to pick a sign for the Campus Signage Project is more difficult than I originally thought it would be. I sometimes envy those that live so close to campus and can walk into any one of NIU’s buildings and take pictures or look around. With the few pictures I took, I wondered if I needed to take more pictures or just look through what I have and go from there. I’ve contemplated just driving back to NIU for more pictures and a chance to see more flyers. Dr. Kyburz did say we could use any flyer we wanted and reassured us that it isn’t mandatory we use an NIU flyer or a flyer posted on campus. I considered looking for flyers at other locations or choosing a flyer from work, however, before I could pursue that further, I found the flyer I wanted to use! I took pictures of 21 different flyers in our building and Reavis before leaving the night the assignment was introduced. I did not go through my phone to see if there was a flyer I wanted to work on because I sort of skimped eac...

"Box Logic" Geoffrey Sirc

Box-logic by Geoffrey Sirc outlines the effect technology has on us and the limitations and freedom surrounding technology. “...Do we teach college or life?” (113) stood out to me and was one of the central topics surrounding Sirc’s claim. Sirc makes a good argument about the effect technology has on learning structures and encourages teachers to understand the new intricacies concerning social media. Sirc encourages teachers to teach more about life and less about scholarly work. Sirc believes that if students are prepared and well equipped with life teachings and life rules, that is by far more rewarding and beneficial than learning scholarly jargon. I believe a good mix of both is relevant for all students. There are classes that could be geared towards thinking more about life than others and it depends on the teacher’s ability to expand and determine what is within the realm of teaching and reason. Sirc also encourages teachers to teach in a manner that will prepare students f...

Objectified: Gary Hustwit

The scene in the documentary that really moved me was when Apple was discussed. Apple, as a company, became very popular and relevant not just because of the capabilities of iphones, macbooks, ipods, etc. One of the main reasons for Apple’s success lies in the design of their products and the way their designs have evolved overtime. Apple was one of the leading trendsetters in design because their products were not only appealing because of their functionality, but also because of the stylistic approach. Jonathan Ive, Apple’s CEO, states that one of Apple’s first concern when creating a product is the design. They attempt to get the design “out of the way” before beginning to focus on the product itself. He stated that the products Apple creates and sells seems almost undesigned. The reason behind this logic is the amount of time and effort it takes to strip materials of any parts of components that are not needed or effective. The macbook for instance, only has parts of “imper...

Blogging

Image
When I learned that everyone was required to create a blog and frequently share thoughts, I was a bit worried due to the general private nature and insecurities I have pertaining to my ideas and creativity. Although I believe I can be relatively creative, I sometimes worry about other people's opinions and can get bogged down by this. Learning to overcome these insecurities has been a challenge but I find I am constantly improving and more open each and every day.  I originally wondered why blogging has become so popular and something that seems as though a large population of people partake in, which prompted me to do some research. Blogging can be quite helpful to those attempting to learn about a particular subject or share particular experiences or even everyday experiences. Different blogs appeal to different people and I have found myself reading blogs about particular things I find interesting such as religion, education, politics, and travel.  When choosing t...
